Event Description

Bess Ward, William J. Sinclair Professor of Geosciences and the Princeton Environmental Institute, will present, "Ocean Nitrous Oxide — No Laughing Matter," at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Guyot Hall, Room 10.

The ocean emits up to half of all natural nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, a strong greenhouse gas and a potent destroyer of the ozone layer. Ward will report on her research from the Pacific Ocean into the microbial processes that produce and consume atmospheric nitrous oxide. She will explore the implications for nitrous oxide fluxes in a warmer world caused by human-made climate change.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served at noon in the Guyot Atrium. Ward is the third speaker in the Spring 2019 PEI Faculty Seminar Series.
