Project Title:  Photoredox Catalyzed Giese-Type Addition Using Alkyl Chlorides Via Silyl-Radical Mediated Chlorine Atom Abstraction

Project Summary: This research opportunity seeks to utilize a nickel-free method to activate alkyl chlorides and add into electron-deficient alkenes to build structurally complex, C(sp3) rich molecules using blue light as an energy source (Scheme 1). Researchers involved in this project will learn the (i) fundamentals to photoredox catalysis, (ii) setting up photoredox reactions, (iii) recrystallization, (iv) purifying compounds using column chromatography, (v) analyzing chemical products using spectroscopic instrumentation such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC), and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Student Roles and Responsibilities: Experiments and analysis

Additional Considerations:  Start and end dates are flexible, but the student should be available at least 20 hours/week.
