For Thomas Pisano, the motivation to become a doctor and scientist was personal. A skiing accident left his legs paralyzed, fueling his aspiration to become a physician and biomedical researcher who could both conduct scientific investigations and apply that knowledge to saving lives in the clinic.
Through the Princeton Catalysis Initiative (PCI), scientists, engineers and scholars are reaching across disciplinary boundaries to create and explore new research areas at the intersection of what were once separate fields. PCI held its second annual symposium on campus Jan. 15-16, bringing researchers together to help fan the sparks of innovation and collaboration.
Saira Reyes had planned to study materials science before she interned in Jose Avalos’ bioengineering lab last summer. Her work there altering genes of organisms to produce biofuels struck a chord with her.
“It was as if I was looking at a giant biological puzzle,” said Reyes, a sophomore. “I realized I love bioengineering.”
Princeton University’s latest sustainable innovation can be found along the edge of campus just behind FitzRandolph Observatory. There, under a white tent, hums a new biodigester that turns food waste into nutrient-rich compost. Since operations began in fall 2018, more than 16 tons of food scraps have been converted into compost.

The International Symposium on Indigenous Communities and Climate Change, held Dec. 6 and 7 at the Princeton Public Library and Princeton University, brought together scholars and journalists to explore the impact of climate change on Indigenous communities throughout the Americas and Russia.
